Everyone who loves strolling in the great outdoors and would like to know more about how the landscape has evolved over time.


This active course will offer an opportunity to walk through, learn and discuss past lives and people in two different yet nearby locations – the village of Bere Alston and its surrounding countryside, where medieval miners hewed silver from the ground, and Calstock, where a medieval community founded a village and church in the footprint of a Roman fort. Students will learn about the archaeology of these landscapes and discuss the trials of life for those who inhabited them, thereby offering opportunity reflect on their own life experiences. This will be a guide-led walking/visit event.

N.B. Lunch is not provided so students are asked to bring a packed lunch. Please wear suitable clothing for the weather.  Sturdy shoes/trainers or wellies are recommended i.e. no flipflops/open toes.

VENUE: Bere Alston Parish Hall, Station Road, Bere, Alston, PL20 7EJ
With minibus pick-up points in Exeter and Tavistock.
Transport to Bere Alston and Calstock, Cornwall
:  We will rendezvous at Bere Alston Parish Hall at 11:00am. Free transport from Exeter with a single pick-up in Tavistock. To catch the minibus, we will meet at 9:30am in Exeter outside CoLab (formerly Wat Tyler House), 3 King William Street, Exeter EX4 6PD leaving promptly at 9:45am, and then pick up at 10:45am in Tavistock outside: Learn Devon, Alexander Centre, 62 Plymouth Road, Tavistock PL19 8BU for transport to Bere Alston. We will plan to leave from Calstock, Cornwall at about 3:30pm, returning via Tavistock to Exeter CoLab approximately 5:00pm.
